What is a Medical Grade Computer?

A medical pc first and foremost needs to be medically certified. Many websites will claim different compliance codes, and many manufacturers and resellers will play with words, but the fact remains. If it's not medically certified, then it's a consumer computer and not a medical grade computer.

The most common medical certification is the UL/cUL60601-1 & IEC 60601-1-2 4th edition. This international certification from an independent and accredited lab tests electromagnetic and radiation emissions to ensure patient, operator, and connected machines' safety.

If a manufacturer isn't able to provide test reports and certification from an accredited lab, chances are their products aren't certified and are not medical grade. Don't take the risk.

Medical fanless computers are used in many aspects of healthcare. In hospitals, for example, you'll find them in the OR, ER, imaging department, hospital's pharmacy, and many more departments. Due to the nature of work done in these places, reliability isn't negotiable since any mishaps can have disastrous effects.

What are Medical Computer Standards?

Since its main goal is to facilitate all healthcare operations and streamline the workflow, it should be engineered and built with that in mind. The most important thing it needs is the ability to handle tough environments in hospitals or medical facilities.

Below is a list of the most important features to look for when choosing a medical PC.

Fanless cooling technology allows the computer to cool off without kicking up dust in the air or circulating particulates in sensitive spaces that require extreme cleanliness. Fanless cooling also plays a role in helping the computer last longer and require less maintenance, since moving parts usually break first.

This is a crucial feature in a healthcare computer. Germs and bacteria are risks hospitals and medical facilities can't afford to overlook. Having an IP65 rating allows operators to spray the computer with harsh chemicals and disinfectants to keep it clean. It also gives users the peace of mind of not having to worry about water, blood, or any liquids splashing on the device, allowing them to focus on the job at hand.

There are different types of housings with built in antimicrobial properties to protect the computer from degradation or deterioration. Like all of Cybernet's devices, a fanless medical computer should have antimicrobial properties built in to protect the resin and plastic parts.

The computer you choose should have especially low failure rates. This is an often disregarded thought until a computer breaks down or faces a problem and the consequences can't be undone.

Fanless cooling helps with this as we mentioned above, the use of industrial grade components in the manufacturing process of the motherboard as well as peripherals such as SSD/HDD & display panel is also a huge durability booster, allowing the computer to last longer.

Having hot swappable batteries that can last more than a whole shift is an added bonus as well, giving complete mobility and allowing the computer to stay on as long as needed.

Hospitals and medical facilities usually have expensive older equipment which might not connect to newer computers and ports. A true medically certified computer should have legacy ports to allow for such devices to be connected instead of forcing the practice to purge all the older equipment and make that costly upgrade.

How are Medical Computers Used in Healthcare?

Computers are the backbone of our modern world, and they are no different in the healthcare industry. Computers are used for everything from monitoring patients, calibrating equipment, record keeping, communication, and much more. Here are some of the ways computers are used in modern healthcare.

  • Electronic Health Records
  • Surgical applications
  • Diagnosis and imaging
  • Telemedicine
  • Medical research
  • Laboratory and pharmacies
  • Data analysis

What are the Different Types?

There are many different types of computers for healthcare and usually they have a variety of options to fit every medical facility's needs. All our medical PCs are built with fanless cooling technology to minimize the need for maintenance, risk of breaking down, and more importantly stirring up dust and germs in sterile environments.

Medical Panel PCs tend to be the most common. They are powerful, compact, and able to perform all tasks required in healthcare. They come in an assortment of shapes and sizes and a host of features to choose from.

Medical Cart Computers are built with hot swappable batteries that can power the unit without the need to plug into an outlet or a powered cart. As batteries are depleted, they can be swapped out for a fully charged battery without powering down the unit, allowing for near 24/7 uptime. These computers can also power peripherals like barcode scanners and printers, making them ideal for nurse's carts and doing rounds.

4k All-in-One Medical Computers which are PCs specifically designed to help you see every detail. They're perfect for diagnostic and imaging use, but are still powerful and versatile to be used in any application while providing more vibrance and clarity. 4k medical PCs can be hot swappable battery-operated or can just plug in and have a 5 hours backup battery.

Medical Device Computers with the size, power, and features that position them perfectly to be embedded in medical devices, these computers are usually integrated within devices or used as control panels for medical equipment. Highly scalable and performs great as a standalone computer as well.

PoE Medical Computers are low power-consuming computers that don't need traditional wall plugs. They can be powered over an ethernet cable and are perfect for mounting or embedding in walls and other flat surfaces, as a check-in computer for example.

Medical Box PCs are another chart-topping type of computers used in healthcare. Due to its small form factor, they've gained massive popularity in the healthcare industry especially in places where space is scarce and valuable. They also tend to be robust and powerful with a much smaller footprint and an almost endless amount of customizable features.
